Be informed

Editor: On July 6th, a letter to the editor by Scott Hurban entitled, “Don’t be stupid” was published in the Tracy Press. Before reaching the end of the first sentence in the letter, one encounters a reference to the Judeo-Christian foundation of our nation. While Mr. Hurban may believe that this nation was founded upon religious principles, he is in direct contradiction with the following official quote by the second president of the United States.

"The government of the United States is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion." - From the Treaty of Tripoli, unanimously approved by the U.S. Senate and signed by President John Adams in 1797.

He goes on to describe retiring Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor as disappointing. However, he fails to mention that she cast a dissenting vote in the property rights ruling that he likens to trampling by the ‘Imperial Court’.

While he may not be stupid, many of the statements he makes without factual basis lead me to the conclusion that he either chooses to believe what he wants despite the truth, or that he may be misinformed.
