EDITOR: Given all of the sheep about, I was hoping to knit a new sweater. I read with disgust and sadness L. Payne's letter, published in Friday's "Tracy Press," entitled "He isn't nice" and recognized the regurgitation of the propaganda that the Bush administration has been spewing to the American public and the world in an attempt to scare us into supporting an unprovoked invasion of a sovereign nation.
Yes, Saddam is a slug, but so what? George Tenet, director of the CIA, reported last fall that intelligence suggests Saddam Hussein would not likely launch a biological or chemical attack except possibly in response to an invasion and takeover.
It is bewildering that the American public doesn't seem to realize that we gave Saddam his germs, and that the United States has far more biological, chemical, and nuclear weapons of mass destruction than any other country on earth.
Who should we fear? The irresponsible approach that George W. Bush and his cronies, Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld are taking is far scarier. They are hawking war and placing us in further harm's way for what many believe are largely economic motivations.
Gimme a 'W'…, Gimme an 'A'…, Gimme an 'R' – whaddya get? OIL!
If Mr. Bush spent the $200 billion projected as the cost for a war with Iraq on his hydrogen fuel initiative, instead of the paltry $1.2 billion, we would be rid of foreign dependence for our energy needs in no time, and many who would die in a war, would instead live to be with their families and contribute to society.
Let's also keep the facts straight. Osama bin Laden and a gang of criminals attacked our country, not Saddam Hussein or Iraq. In fact, in the history of the world, Iraq has never launched an unprovoked attack on the United States – ever!
